How smog is different from smoke?

Smog is sometimes misconnected with smoke because both of them are a mixture of air pollutants. But smog is more dangerous for the lungs than smoke. Smog is a mixture of volatile organic compounds, whereas smoke is produced due to the burning of oxygen and carbon dioxide compounds. They can be identified by using detectors. There are different interconnected smart smoke detectors present in homes and offices to detect smoke in the surroundings. While on the other hand, smog is also visible air pollution, but it can be identified without using any detectors.

How much is dangerous smoke?

Smoke is the end stage of the burning of fuels, and it irritates your eyes when you around it. Smoke is usually not that dangerous because it has no harmful chemicals in it, and it is just the burning of carbon dioxide and oxygen molecules. But if the smoke is produced due to carbon monoxide, it can cause shortness of breath, and if the person stays longer in a room where the burning of carbon monoxide produces smoke, then there is a chance the person might die. But otherwise, it has no other harmful effects on health.

Why is smog more harmful?

When it comes to smog, it is a photochemical substance produced due to vehicles' overuse and is usually a mixture of fog and smoke. Although very much similar to smoke, it is more dangerous because it can have long-lasting effects on people's lungs. It can affect the working of both the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. It reduces the functional ability of the lungs by aggravating the already underlying conditions like asthma and bronchitis.

Sources of smoke and smog

There are very few smoke sources, and they are different types of fires like campfires, wildfires, candles, different types of pest control activities, and cigarettes. Whereas smog is the result of different human activities, they are the pollutants carried by the wind, overuse of vehicles, coal power plants, different chemicals released from gasoline. When sunlight hits these compounds, smog is produced in the air.
